Yesterday Milford L. Humphries passed from this life. Milford was the husband of Lois Humphries and the father of Nancy Hughes and Amy Harris. He was a man that worked hard his entire life ensuring his family always had what they needed. Milford was a friend to many people. To me he was my father-in-law, friend, teacher and mentor.
When Nancy and I married, I had only been a Christian a short time. Milford on the other hand was a seasoned veteran. I had the opportunity to watch, listen and learn from him on many things. One of those was being a faithful Christian. He taught me early on about attending church regularly; doing all I could to learn the word, and that doing the right thing would provide a positive outcome. I also learned from him some things about hard work and having fun. I remember one summer he and I fenced off an area of land so Nancy and I could build a house. It was in July and the ground was hard as a rock. When we finally completed that fence, I thought if I ever built another fence that would be too soon. He was a hard worker and outworked me many times. He had fun too. One of his favorite pastimes was playing Rook. In the 80’s you could go to the General Store in Hulaco and find him and several others playing most of the time. I would go with him when I could. He taught me how to play and how to watch and learn from others. We always had a great time when we played. He typically won the games he was a part of.
Over the last few weeks, I have heard many stories from Lois, Nancy, Amy, Tyler, Trey, Kelsey and Matthew and other family members about Paw. That’s what we all called him. Paw loved his children and grandchildren. He loved to take them fishing and out to check on his cows. I am thankful his children and grandchildren have so many stories about him. What a testament to his life! These stories were great to hear and relive. The memories we have about him will live in our hearts forever.
Yesterday, Milford left this life but we all have an opportunity to see him again. It’s hard no matter what age, to see our loved ones leave but what a day of rejoicing we will have when we see them in Heaven someday. We can thank our Savior, Jesus Christ for that opportunity and also thank him for comfort.
Paw, thanks for a lifetime of memories. You rest now.
Psalm 23
A Psalm of David
(1) The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. (2) He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. (3) He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. (4) Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. (5) Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. (6) Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
Have a blessed week.
